This post is for those of you who who are interested in SEO. I’ve been a pre-member of Huomah’s SEO Dojo community for a while now and it is opening up to new members as of today.

What is the SEO Dojo? It is a closed door, gated community which gives search professionals and those wanting to learn more about search engines a safe haven to study and collaborate.

There’s some serious educational material within the walls of the community (really, I kid you not, there’s lots of stuff there to fill your mind with). And of course, there’s a strong community of Seriously Obsessed Search Geeks (SOSG) discussing search issues.

The SEO Dojo is ideal for:

Individuals who want to increase their SEO knowledge

Professional SEOs looking for a quality community

Webmasters and site owners seeking advice from top professionals

Finding cross-site (and vertical) promotions and opportunities

SEOs who want to learn more about how search engines work

Anyone that needs to learn MORE about the world of search marketing

Search geeks looking to interact with other SEO addicts

I recommend reading more about it here. It not only outlines more about the community itself, but it also tells you about all the extras you get – including free access to awesome tools (like Raven SEO tools, for example, plus tons more).

Another cool thing is that I’ve been given a special code that you can use to get 25% off of the price of membership (which is already reasonable) for the first 25 DD readers who choose to use it. Dave (the dojo leader) assigned my code to be “DonnaRocks”, so just use that coupon code to get your 25% discount. (Dave likes to embarrass me, I think).

If you are at all interested in search marketing, you should check it out. Dave’s done a bangup job of making a great community.

Determination. That’s been my mantra for the last few weeks. You see, I knew that I’d let a few things get away from me over time, and that I needed to buckle down and really get some stuff done. I have a couple of websites that desperately needed some attention, so if you think I’ve been quiet here and elsewhere, I can tell you why.

Determination.

I’ve been determined to focus, focus, focus, and work, work, work at getting things done that needed doing.

That determination is paying off big time. The sites I’ve been focusing on are growing by leaps and bounds, and the content is attracting both search engines and visitors.

I may have put this blog on the backburner the last few weeks, but it doesn’t mean I haven’t been working really hard. It just means I’ve used my determination elsewhere.

What about you? How determined are you to get things done! How determined are you to not get distracted? How determined are you to focus, focus, focus?

The level of your determination will help determine the level of your success down the road.

So ask yourself the question: “How Determined Am I?”

Over time, I’ve written guest posts or contributory posts on several sites across the web. It occurred to me today that some of you might benefit from those postings, because they focus on topics that I don’t tend to delve into very much here on this blog. So I’ve rounded them up and hopefully I’ve included them all, but I can’t promise that I didn’t forget about one or two of them. If I missed any, someone let me know, k?

Determine the rate of importance that Google places upon each of your pages, not by PageRank, but by analyzing crawl rate.
Exhale Creativity: Inhale Buzz

Sometimes you jut get lucky and buzz spreads about your company, product, or service seemingly out of thin air. While it’s truly exciting when that happens, I wouldn’t sit around waiting for it. Sometimes you have to make your own luck. Buzz usually requires an excellent product or service that just knocks the socks right off everyone. If yours can generate that WOW factor simply because it is so great and solves a problem that everyone has, then you’re definitely ahead of the game. However, even WOW products can be overlooked in the daily stream of our lives. That’s when you need to help get the buzz started, and creativity is the best way to make that happen.

Streamline Your Content Creation Process With Time-Saving Systems

I run sites that are mostly informational in nature, and since informational sites need lots of actual … well … information, that means I spend a good deal of my time creating content. Creating good content takes time, and like most of you, I have very little time, so over the years I’ve created a “system” that helps me shave off as much wasted time as possible during the process. Here’s a glimpse at the content creation system that works for me. Feel free to use any parts of my system to streamline your own content creation process.

Intelligently Crafting Content

I could start off this article by saying that to succeed with SEO, you should create high-quality content, but if I did that, you would immediately think, “same old ‘content is king’ blah, blah, blah”, and you’d probably not read any further. So instead, let’s just start off by stipulating that creating great content is a given. So often, however, no one really goes beyond the phrase “good content” to discuss how to create that content, and just as importantly, how to plan it out, and effectively create a flow throughout the site.

Analyzing Your Text Content from a Graphic Point of View

“You can’t see the forest for the trees” is an old saying that holds much truth when we are trying to analyze our own content. You’ve looked at your own content so much you probably no longer see it the way your visitors do (or the way search engines will). Sometimes I find it useful to look at the words on my site in a completely different way. By viewing your content differently than you’ve ever done before, you open up the possibility of seeing the individual trees within your content forest again. Here’s a little exercise I like to use now and then.

Link Bartering

Link bartering is NOT the act of trading links (reciprocal linking), but is the act of trading services, which usually results in acquiring nice links and recommendations.

Creating Subliminal Connections Between Your Site and Hot Trends

What if you could associate your site, your niche, or your product with a hot new trend? What if the search results showed your site for that popular new gizmo or movie? What if I told you that you can create a subliminal connection between your site and any hot new gadget/movie/song/toy/etc. no matter what niche your site or product is in? And what if you stood a good chance of ranking well for that hot trend?

The Swirling Vortex of Social Networking

Social networking is increasingly becoming a vital aspect of our search marketing efforts. The connections we form amongst our online social communities can provide ever-expanding avenues of awareness of our sites, brand recognition, and ultimately buzz and link-love.

Sadly, however, there is a dark side to social networking. This dark side is one that we’d rather not talk about because we are afraid we might see it within ourselves. What could possibly be so scary? I call it the swirling vortex of social networking.

Using the Science of Social Proof in SEO

I’ve written about Robert Cialdini in the past and how his six persuasion principles can be used in search marketing. Briefly, the six principles are Liking, Reciprocity, Social Proof, Consistency, Authority, and Scarcity. All six are worth spending some serious study time with, but today I want to focus on just one – Social Proof.

Tracking Site Page Importance Via Crawl Cache Dates

A discussion centered around the realization that Google cache dates were the new PageRank and that crawl frequency is an excellent indicator of the importance of a page, which leads to an explanation in how to track this metric.

How To Create No-Fail Hot Content

Would you like your site content to rank well? Would you like your content to draw links like nails to a magnet? There is one strategy you can use to make sure the content you create is almost guaranteed to be a hit – and in the process it gathers backlinks and ranks well. This strategy isn’t some secret ninja tactic that would get your site banned if the search engines found out about it either. In fact, it’s a tactic that the search engines would be happy to recommend to all site owners.
And while the actual creation of the content may take some time and effort, the concept is extremely simple. So what is this awesome strategy?

Blueprint of a Successful SEO Campaign

The surest way to successfully construct a building is to follow a blueprint. A blueprint contains detailed plans and designs that enables skilled personnel to build the structure just from the blueprint. In the same way, a detailed set of plans is the surest way to build a successful search marketing campaign. And just like construction blueprints, while each SEO blueprint may be unique, each will also contain similar details to ensure success. What details should a search marketing blueprint contain?

SEO – Vital Inclusion to the Overall Marketing Mix

Companies are beginning to embrace SEO as a legitimate means of marketing, but they often throw a paltry amount of marketing dollars towards it, or they allocate most or all of the search budget to PPC only. That is a mistake, even for companies that don’t sell products or services online. Let’s take a look at some interesting statistics that will help show how important it is for companies to concentrate significant resources towards ranking well in the search engines’ organic rankings, which are the natural listings returned on the left side of the search results page.

When A Good Idea Goes Wrong – SEO Oopsies

If you search the Internet, you can find at least a few dozen lists that outline the common mistakes a newbie SEO might make. Just to make sure I don’t leave out the obligatory list, I’ll present it below. After that, however, I’ll detail what really happens when a beginner starts to see results from his or her first search marketing experiments.

This next batch is a series of posts I’ve done for SEO Chicks. Keep in mind that the SEO Chicks blog is a sometimes serious, sometimes tongue-in-cheek, sometimes just plain goofy look at the search world, so if some of these posts seem a little “less than professional”, that would be why.

Behavioral Based Ads Bad for Publishers and Scary for Users

Google just announced that it would start providing interest-based Adsense ads. I have a bit of experience with being a publisher that serves ad based on past user behavior and interests. That experience isn’t a very good one. If you are in the mood, follow along as I tell you my little tale of how behavior-based ads can be bad for everyone. (*names changed to protect the guilty and the innocent)

Dr. Phil Would Tell You That Stubborness Won’t Get You Higher Rankings

(A semi-fictional tale)

Back in the day, long, long, ago, SEO was a simpler time and place. With a little understanding of basic on-page fundamentals, and the knowledge that ‘the player with the most links wins’ (even if those links were bogus or internally generated), a chicklet could own the SERPs. If that gal had a nice network of sites from which to gather backlinks, mo’ betta!

Lots of things have changed over the years. Algos have injected annoying things such as ‘trust’ and ‘quality’ into the mix, and link juice no longer gets distributed evenly and equally, as algos decide whether or not there is enough juice to go around.

Despite the many changes, some folks just refuse to let go of the things they long to hold onto. Let’s consider the case of someone I like to call “Mr. Stubborn”.

If Google Is Unable to Remember Its Own Rules

Google, really, you just can’t expect everyone in the universe who owns a web site to follow your rules. You’ve just proven that by not following your own rules.

Finding SEO Inspiration

To be successful with your SEO campaign, you need to see beyond the simplistic ABC’s of search – looking past the typical optimization rules to get inspired. Find inspiration outside of the (chiclet) box, and you’ll likely find ways to improve both rankings and conversions!

Lets Call This Hypocrite Day Shall We?

There’s nothing new about this post. It’s been said before. But for those who still confuse ethics with believing whatever line of bull the search engines might be throwing out for their own betterment, I wanted to just put out a little reminder on this fine April day.

Link Building Ideas for the Link Building-Challenged

Since link building is about as fun as ripping off your own toenails with pliers, I thought it might be useful to spark some creative ideas into the heads of poor, depressed link builders. You know who you are. So without further ado, or maybe with lots of further ado, it depends on my mood …

I love SEO Conferences, but there’s a good possibility I’ll never attend another one. Why? Well, for one thing, after I tick off all the conference hosts today with this post, the SEO bouncers might block me from entering. But in reality, I may never go to another conference because the prices are just too freaking high. (please bear with me on this long rant, because really, you’ve GOT to read it all – seriously)

I released a new open source, free tool that will hopefully help everyone in the fight against having their sites hacked.

We all hear about how often people’s sites get hacked. This tool won’t stop that from happening, but here’s what it *will* do.

Let’s say a hacker places some malicious code in either some existing files on your site, or in new files on your site. Regardless of which method he used, he got in and accomplished his goal. Now, unbeknownst to you, your site is either:

1) serving hidden links to unsavory places
2) or redirecting just search users to unsavory sites that is then infecting those users’ computers with malware
3) or some other equally nefarious thing.

Either way, your site is toast, even if it looks perfectly normal to the naked eye. You may have no idea anything has happened until one day (maybe weeks later) you realize that you’ve been kicked out of Google’s SERPs (search listings).

Now you frantically start trying to find out why, and maybe, if you’re lucky, you realize you’ve been hacked. Then you have to begin the process of finding the files with the malicious code. Good luck with that!

That’s the basic problem. My new tool will help with that problem to some extent.

What it won’t do…it won’t prevent the attack. There are other things you should be doing/using to help win that battle. But if you lose that battle, and the attack happens, my tool kicks into gear.

My tool, called MonitorHackdFiles, is like a sentry for your site. It watches your site, and when it detects a file has changed (or been added), it notifies you via email and tells you which file(s) was changed. Now you know very quickly that you’ve been attacked, and you can react just as quickly. Now you can take whatever measures are needed to lock the site down, and with luck, you’ll avoid ever having that malicious code show its ugly face to Google, other search engines, or users.

It’s entire goal is to watch and notify. What you do with the information is entirely up to you. But what you don’t know, CAN hurt you.

Back when I owned webchicklet.com, I put more info there about this tool. You can read it here.

Download the MonitorHackdFiles script for free, run the 5 minute install, and let it guard your site for you automatically.

I try to cover as much of the basics as possible for creating a successful site online that will earn you a comfortable living. I’m not able, within a blog format, to really get into the kinds of detail that a full hard-cover book can get – on every detailed subject. Jon Wuebben, in his book Content Rich: Writing Your Way to Wealth on the Web, does a great job of really covering one very important topic well – how to create compelling, keyword-rich copy for your site. The right copy will convert well, it will enable your site to rank well in the search engines, and it will attract traffic and links. All of these things help to bring your site to the level of success that you’re looking for.

Here’s a quick look at what’s covered. Jon begins with the basics of SEO copywriting, which includes analyzing your site’s copy and usability, keyword research, and optimizing the content. He then moves on to discussing the various types of seo copywriting, such as site copy, articles, press releases, blogs, wikis, landing pages and newsletters. Next, he puts it all together with real world examples and case studies of various sized businesses. By showing you real-world examples and case studies, Jon helps to really clarify the benefits of seo copywriting, and gives clear instructions on how to do it right. Finally, he ends with showing how to outsource your copywriting project, discusses choosing seo copywriting as a career, and wraps it up with the future of seo copywriting.

Because I’m an old SEO by trade, I wanted to pick the book apart and find where he might have gone wrong, but I wasn’t able to do that, because he gives straight-forward, easy to understand information that is right on the money. If you want to write compelling copy that attracts traffic and converts visitors to buyers, you won’t go wrong by reading Content Rich: Writing Your Way to Wealth on the Web. It was a good read, and I’ve added it to my collection.

Oh, this just in…the author has informed me that he will be holding a “super 1 Day sale” on Amazon on Wednesday, February 18, 2009. If you order the book on that day, you’ll receive these extra goodies:

Dianna Booher’s ebook “Affect or Effect? 258 Commonly Misused Words Along with Proper Usages” + her Online Grammar Assessment ($39.95 value)

Scott Fox’s ebook “E-Business Strategy Basics” ($34.95 value)

Bob Bly’s ebook “Online Marketing that Works” ($39.95 value)

Free website copy analysis (priceless!)

That’s enough to make me consider getting a duplicate copy of the book just to get the extras.

*

Disclosure: Affiliate links may be used within this post for products I recommend. They in no way affect my judgement of said products, nor do they affect the price of the product.

Occasionally, I’ll explore methods of making money online without having experience with it myself. Generally, I only like to pass on things I’ve tried, so that you get the benefit of my experience. Sometimes, though, I know people who have the experience that I don’t, and I will occasionally allow them to guest post here. That’s the case today. The following is a guest post by Thomas Gajdjis on the subject of blog flipping. Blog flipping is a process I may play with over the next few months, so it seems like a good time to introduce the topic. Here’s Tom!

Blog Flipping
Guest Post by: Thomas Gajdjis

I have been online making money since 2003. Since that time, I have seen many ways of making money come and go. I don’t buy into the latest fads, especially when I am building my business. I heard that some Internet Marketers were making big money flipping websites. I personally don’t buy into hype from the “gurus”, so I had to check it out and prove it for myself.

Technically, website flipping is a process that involves finding a website that has potential and purchasing it, fixing it up and then selling it for a profit. That was too many steps for me so I decided to shorten up the process a bit to make it simpler.

The result is what I call blog flipping. First off, we build the blog, we don’t go looking for one. Second, I decided to use the blog as the platform of choice. Why did I choose blogs instead of traditional websites? There are many reasons, but here are the most important ones:

Setting up the blog takes only minutes.

There are many free themes available which make your blog look great. This is important for high resale value.

There are many free plug-ins to engage your visitors and to monetize the blog and to grow a customer list.

It is really easy to update the blog with new content. This is important for the sale as non-techie business people want product, not hassle.

Search engines love blogs.

I put together a weight loss blog, outfitted it with a great theme and wrote 15 articles for it. I then went to SitePoint.com and listed it for sale. The auction was successful and my buyer bought additional services from me.

My experiment proved to me that this was a profitable, viable, repeatable business model. I have added it to my income streams. I have a free write-up of the experiment here: www.blogflippingfool.com. I also created a paid version that shows you how to build a business by flipping blogs. All my resources are included and I actually expose my 5 favorite niches! You can follow my other Internet Marketing experiments at my IM blog here: www.5000dollarsin45days.com.

Thanks, Tom! Be on the lookout for more guest posts about this subject. I know others who are also into blog flipping and I’ll be testing out hints and tips from each. If you decide to try this along with me over the next few months, I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences about it.

Which search engine should you use to search for images? My opinion: all of them! If you only use one search engine to search for an image, you could be missing out on some spectacular images. But I don’t expect you to waste time going from one search engine to another. That’s what metaengines are for, and my favorite is Zuula.

I use Zuula 100% of the time as my web search engine, but I also love it for image search as well. And now that they’ve added even more image engines to the list, it’s great! Want me to prove to you that you shouldn’t be relying on just one image search engine? Ok!

The first thing you’ll notice about Zuula’s image search is that there are 10 engines all nicely laid out in tabs, so you can quickly click from one to another. Here’s a reduced screenshot of the 10 tabs (hard to read, I know, but it had to be reduced to fit).

The tabs listed are Google, Yahoo, MSN, Pixsy, Flickr, Stockxchng, Photobucket, Picasa, SmugMug, and Exalead. (I’ve arranged the tabs in the order I preferred – you can rearrange your tabs in any order you want).

Now let’s say you’d only searched on Google for the term “daylilies”. This is what you’d see.

Not very exciting, and very likely, not what you were looking for. Now scan down the screenshots of what each of the other search engines found for the term “daylilies”. Look at what you would have missed out on seeing if you hadn’t used Zuula to search!

And THAT’S why you shouldn’t limit your searching to just one search engine.

*just a little search tip o’ the day from me to you

We all share a common goal – increasing traffic to our site or blog. Without traffic, our sites are invisible. Traffic, however, can come from many sources. Some of those sources are gold mines of highly targeted traffic consisting of visitors who are wanting to consume and interact with our content. Some sources are next to worthless and our sites would be better off without the waste of bandwidth. Below, I’ve listed what I consider to be the most common forms of traffic, rated from best to worst. Use this as a guide when promoting your site, so that you focus your energies in the right places.

Organic search engine traffic – This is the granddaddy of all traffic. Visitors who arrive at your site from a search they’ve conducted are extremely targeted. This is what SEOs live for – high search engine rankings for popular phrases related to your niche. Bonus points if the great rankings are on Google, as that sends far more traffic than others. Don’t make the mistake of concentrating solely on search engine traffic however. If you lose your rankings, and you have no other sources of traffic, your site’s traffic will be devastated.

Sponsored search engine traffic (PPC) – Second best is the traffic obtained from visitors clicking on sponsored listings from those same search engines. Essentially, you get all the same benefits as above, but there’s one difference. You have to pay for this traffic. The major search engines have made it a bit more complicated to play the PPC (pay per click) game. No longer is it as simple as “the biggest spenders get the top listings”. You can be very successful with this method, and the fact that you have more control over placement is a big draw. Keep in mind, however, that without experience, you may end up spending a bundle of cash on PPC systems such as Google’s Adwords without reaping any profits.

Referrals from other sites – This could come in several forms. Other sites may simply link to you because they like your site, or you may have chosen to purchase advertising (either as a link or a banner ad) on others’ sites. Either way, if a highly-trafficked sites in your niche recommend your site, there’s a good chance that you’ll receive nicely targeted traffic from those sites.

Participation in forums/communities – If you participate in forums and communities related to your niche, you can build up an element of trust. That trust helps send others community participants to your site via any links that you’ve listed in your signatures or profile pages. This may not send large quantities of traffic, but it will probably be traffic that has a strong bond with you. Those visitors may then go on to either link to your site or recommend your site in other ways.

Guest blogging – Like the community participation above, guest blogging helps build up others’ trust in you, and your name becomes well known. This in turn builds up your personal brand, and you become more recognizable. At some point, people will know who you are, and that almost always translates into more site traffic. Obviously, you should be creating quality posts on others’ blogs if you hope to succeed with this method of traffic generation and increase blog traffic.

Social networking – Traffic from social networks such as Digg and Stumbleupon, or social bookmarking sites such as Delicious, or popular video sites such as Youtube, can be huge. However, the traffic comes in spikes, usually only lasts for a few hours or at most a few days, and the visitors rarely stick around. These visitors may not be very targeted, or they may just not be all that interested in what you have to offer. Nevertheless, you may get some much-needed attention (buzz) or a few nice links, so social networking traffic is worth getting. It’s just not worth as much as the factors mentioned above, in my opinion.

Article marketing / Directory submissions – Submitting your site to directories or writing articles that will be syndicated via article marketing sites are both useful for obtaining a few links to your sites, and perhaps a handful of visitors. You won’t see much direct traffic from these sources, so put this a bit lower on your list of things to do. It’s not a bad idea, and it can be useful for link building purposes, but it’s just not highly useful.

Purchasing traffic packages and traffic exchange programs – In general, you should avoid these, and I only include this in the list so that I can warn you about them. If you are tempted to “buy millions of visitors for only $99″ or whatever the offer is, ask yourself if you enjoy throwing money away. These types of programs may or may not send you traffic, but the traffic they do send will likely either be fake or it will consist of visitors who have absolutely no interest whatsoever in your site. You will be wasting money. Likewise, traffic exchange packages usually consist of webmasters visiting each others sites, just to obtain more traffic for their own sites. Again, they aren’t interested in your site at all. They only want to increase their own traffic, which won’t be useful traffic for them either.

I’m sure there are other traffic sources, but those are the ones that I receive the most traffic from. If you know of any other great sources, please share in the comments below.

This morning, as I was on my Internet travels, floating from one new blog to another, I found myself on a blog written by a man who lives not far from me. It’s always interesting to discover a neighbor in this vast ‘net world, so I stopped long enough to read a bit of what he had written. I noticed this little tidbit of advice and thought I would pass it along to you, with my own thoughts injected as well, of course.

Chris Hartwell, of New Orleans Internet Marketing, said:

I tell everybody I know, if you’re interested in anything, start a website on it. Let me help you with it. Just put something out there, and sooner or later, if you work on it a little bit, it will make some money for you.

He then goes on to say:

The fact is, advertisers need relevant space to advertise.

He is absolutely correct. Even if you aren’t exactly sure what you are doing, or what you should be doing, get it started. You can work out the kinks later, but the sooner you have a presence on the net, the sooner it will be a presence that has monetary value.

Buy a domain name, purchase hosting, install WordPress, and establish yourself as an Internet Entity. * You can dress it up with a nicely designed theme, and worry about content and monetization later. But the sooner you have an actual site, the sooner it can begin the aging process. (Hint: In general, the older a site is, the more value it has).

One last thing: After you’ve created your site, you’ll need at least one link to it, so that the search engines can discover it. Once the search engines discover it, they mark that discovery date as the “birthdate” of your site. If you create your site today, but the search engines don’t know about it for a couple of years, they won’t show it as being a nice, 2-year-old aged site. The quickest way to get links is to submit your brand new blog to blog directories. We can discuss those in detail later, but for now, if you just run a search on your favorite search engine for the phrase “blog directory”, you should find plenty to submit to.

So, as Nike would say, Just Do It!

*

Disclosure: Affiliate links may be used within this post for products I recommend. They in no way affect my judgement of said products, nor do they affect the price of the product.

I don’t tend to talk a lot about SEO on this blog because that’s what my SEO blog is for. Still, since this blog focuses on making a living online, and this post is about a social network that pays you (yes, you heard that right), and this social network also has SEO benefits, I thought I’d combine it all into one here.

In case you aren’t familiar with social networks, I gave a beginner’s lesson here. If you have ever heard of MySpace or Facebook, then you’ll know the kind of social network I’ll be discussing next.

There’s a new social network on the scene called Yuwie. There are 3 main benefits to Yuwie that I see right off the bat:

Yuwie gives back a portion of its earnings to the Yuwie members – that’s you and me, folks. So you earn money just by being a Yuwie member. And the more active you are, and the more active your page is, the more money you earn. How active are you on those other social networks? Do they pay you for all that time you spend there? No. Yuwie will

Yuwie has SEO benefits. You can post links on your page and those links currently do not have nofollow tags on them. Without going into lots of SEO details, that means that those links count as votes for your sites in the search engines, and we all need as many votes as we can get.

Yuwie looks good with the default template, and you can customize the template as well. The default template is nice and clean, so if you stick with that, your page looks good. But if you want to be creative, you can, and Yuwie makes it easy to do so.

There may be other advantages, but those are the three that impressed me the most. If you want to make a living online, one of the things you need to do is get traffic to your site. Yuwie helps accomplish that. Another thing you need to do is make money. Yuwie helps you accomplish that as well. At the moment, it’s the only social network I know of that accomplishes both of those things for you. Don’t miss out on utilizing it. Check out Yuwie now.
