If you’ve been on a deserted island for the last year you probably haven’t heard about Google Authorship. If you’ve been around and you’re just stubborn, you probably haven’t implemented the Google Authorship tags. If you’re in the latter group, here is more information to get started.

What benefit is there to adding the Google Authorship information to your blogs?

1. Increased exposure

The more times people see your face and name, the more comfortable they will become with you. This will help establish you as an expert in their mind and they’re more likely to click a link with someone they recognize more than just a plain link.

2. Higher CTR

It has been explored many times, but companies and websites with ratings like Amazon and CNET have a higher CTR than those without the star ratings. The same logic is likely to apply with Authorship as well. A picture draws the searchers eye to that listing and they’re more likely to click where they’re looking.

3. More information

Take a look at this search result. As you can see, there is an extra line below the URL and Title of the article. You no doubt also noticed the picture. This also makes the listing stand out and delivers more information about the author. In fact, I would guess that the second listing gets a higher CTR than the first listing!

4. Larger listing

Having a larger listing means that more people will find the information they’re looking for. With the Authorship information (Picture/Bio line) you get 25% more lines that a normal listing. 25% is definitely enough to grab at least a few extra readers who are looking for your information.

With the obvious positives generally come glaring negatives. In the case of Google Authorship there aren’t many negatives. If you don’t have a Google account, you’ll need one. If you use Gmail, AdSense, Adwords, or any of the other Google products, you already have an account and can get started immediately, and why wouldn’t you?

I once complained on Twitter that I could never read the things, and one of my twitter followers suggested I was simply inept because I was unable to read them. So here are a few of the many recaptchas I failed to be able to read today while trying to register for a site.

You’ll notice in that last screenshot, I thought I’d figured out what that one said. I was wrong. That was the point at which I gave up. (Remember, even though I only show 9 screenshots here, I’d actually refreshed the thing over 70 times before I gave up!)

Seriously, the usability of this is so ridiculous that if you try to shove this down my throat, I’m going to just leave your site immediately. There are many anti-spam technologies you can choose from. Some are even worse than reCAPTCHA (though that’s very hard to do), but there are plenty that don’t make me want to throw my computer out the window. Use one of them instead. Please.

And one final note. This is aimed directly at Google. Google, you ride around on your shiny white horse telling webmasters to make their sites better for users, and you systematically punish those that you believe aren’t doing so. Panda, anyone? I wish I had the power you have, Google, because I’d pandalize your sites in a heartbeat just because you own this piece of crap. Get your own house in order, will you?

Luckily, we can get an idea of who some of those smaller casualties were by reading through the long thread started by a Google employee, looking for examples.

The Water Cooler Talk About These Sites

Since then, I’ve noticed quite a few people making fun of the sites listed in that thread. The general attitude in many conversations has been along the lines of, “Well, have you seen those sites? They are typical spammy, autogenerated, ugly MFA sites.” After seeing that kind of remark many times, I just assumed it must be true, and in my mind, all the sites in that thread must be ugly, autogenerated trash.

Once I started really reading through the thread, however, and began looking at some of the sites listed, I questioned what I’d heard. The sites I saw didn’t really fit that description. I’m not saying they are all beautiful, but it isn’t the trash-heap I’d expected.

Just The Looks, Ma’am, Just The Looks

Keep in mind I’m only talking about the overall look and feel of the sites. I haven’t fully analyzed the actual content deep throughout each site. I definitely haven’t had the time to do that. So is it possible that the sites do contain low-quality or ugly content? I suppose so. I’m not able to fully judge that at this point. But I did think someone needed to stand up and say, hey, lots of the sites that got hit DON’T fit the ugly, autogenerated trashy look. All in all, I think they tend to represent the web as a whole pretty well, in terms of design.

So What Do They Look Like?

I grabbed 50 or so sites I found in that thread (turns out to be 45) and took screenshots of the homepages of each. There are more sites in that thread, to be sure, but frankly, I just ran out of time and patience copy/pasting urls and taking screenshots. I figure the following are pretty representative, however, since I just grabbed urls without knowing what they would look like.

So here is a gallery of the homepages of some small sites that Panda Farmer update decimated. Some look good, some not so good, some are a little ugly. I’ll let you decide what you think about the overall “quality” of the sites based only on a quick look at them. Remember: I’m not able to judge the true quality of the content this way, but I did think someone needed to defend against the water cooler talk that all the sites were ugly. A Virtual Smack Upside The Head

I have a lot of friends and acquaintances in the SEO industry, some that I’ve been happy to help promote along the way. These are people I really like as people, and recommend as colleagues. So what happens when they make assumptions that I’m pretty sure are wrong, and then espouse them as facts, holding those assumptions up as flags of proof that they’ve been right all along? What happens? Well, I’ll tell you what happens. My guts get all tangled up in aggravation and frustration because I’m annoyed that I want to smack my friends upside the head. I don’t like wanting to do that. Really! Well, ok, maybe I like smacking my best buddy upside the head (virtually) now and then, but that’s different. He’s my best buddy and can take it. Yeah, buddy, you know who you are.

Conundrum

So. Conundrum. Oh, that’s a good word, isn’t it? Am I starting to sound like Charlie Sheen yet? Hehe. But I digress. Conundrum – an intricate and difficult problem, or what I like to call “being in a pickle”. What do I do when I come across my friends making grandiose statements that make their assumptions sound like facts, and then they wrongly assume that they deserve accolades for having been right all along, when in fact, they probably just got lucky, or hadn’t had to face a particular problem before.

Opinions, Theories, and Guesses, Oh My

How confused am I making you? Hopefully not too much, but I’ll try to de-confuse you. Lately, since Google’s Farmer Update knocked down many content farms, ignored some of the worst content farms, and caused collateral damage to many sites that don’t seemingly fit the content farm profile, there have been quite a few opinions voiced in the SEO industry about the update. I like opinions. I especially like opinions that honestly convey themselves as merely opinions, or perhaps theories, or even wild guesses. That’s what we in the search industry do. We do a lot of guessing, hopefully backed up by some evidence, but the end result is always a guess or a theory or an opinion.

So when some of my friends make some assumptions about the Farmer Update, based on the fact that the few clients they have weren’t hit by the update, and then quickly proclaim things like,

“See our ways are the right ways. If you’d just listened to us all along, you wouldn’t have to worry about these pesky updates”.

(That was me totally paraphrasing a few things I’ve read recently from various people, btw).

Uh, Not So Fast There, My Friend

What gets my goat is that I have a strong OPINION that the things they mentioned are definitely not a part of this update, since I have some insight into some sites that got hit that are clearly not out of line with the “you should have done this and not that” kind of statements being made. Don’t get me wrong. The advice my friends give is generally good advice. But that advice very likely has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not some good sites are seeing problems with the Farmer Update.

But since the sites that these friends control don’t happen to fit a particular pattern, they would probably not have been hit by the Farmer Update, regardless of whether or not my friends’ advice had been heeded. One had nothing to do with the other, in other words. And I say this not as a fact, but as a guess. Yep, I’m merely guessing so keep that in mind, ok?

So now what do I do? What I want to do is slap them around a little and say,

“Hey! Stop patting yourself on the back. Your good advice likely had nothing to do with keeping your clients safe from this particular update, and won’t keep others safe from some other updates. I’ve seen sites that followed your good advice get hit by this update. So, there’s something else going on, maybe, probably, most likely. Don’t make assumptions, and then self-proclaim your righteousness, ok? It’s really annoying.”

But will I do that? No, probably not. Maybe I’m just a wuss. Maybe I don’t want to stir up trouble amongst my friends and acquaintances. Maybe I don’t like fueling name-calling and outing. Maybe this, maybe that. So, instead, I think I’d rather just write a semi-confusing (perhaps) rant that lets me get this off of my chest, without naming and shaming.

But yo…if you’re one of my friends, and the shoe fits…well, ya know…

Please Don’t Pat Me On The Back Either

As always, this rant is the opinion of a woman who has been in the search industry long enough to be tired of the back-patting and self-righteousness of even the nicest people. Remember…you might be wrong. I might be too, so don’t pat me on the back for this rant. Don’t forget that, please.

UPDATE: Since I wrote this post, Matt Cutts of Google admitted that Mayday was an algo change targeted at serving up better long-tail results. It’s been implied that this was aimed at dealing with content farms such as Mahalo that rank well for autogenerated and scraped pages. If you’ve been paying attention to some of the SEO chatter this month, you’ve probably noticed a lot of talk about what’s been dubbed The Google Mayday Update. The name was coined in a WMW thread because of some significant rankings changes in the Google SERPs that some people were seeing right around the beginning of May (2010) – or Mayday. This thread, if you’re interested in reading it, spans 3 threads so far, because it was getting so long. You can see them here, here, and here. Lots of theories swirl in these threads, and at least one live blogger from the GoogleIO event reported that Matt Cutts stated at that event that Mayday is an algorithmic change in Google.

One of the main things being tossed about is that long-tail keyword phrases are taking big hits, and various theories abound as to why. Some wonder if this is related to a roll-out of Caffeine, and of course, there’s side arguments about whether or not Caffeine is really rolling out that widely yet or not. Others think it may be due to a change in valuing recent backlinks (which may also be related to whether or not Caffeine has been rolled out or not). You can probably dig up another few dozen possible theories in those threads, but one thing stands out to me.

Analyzing SERPs Algo Changes Is Harder Than Ever Before

It’s getting harder and harder to analyze what’s going on now that we live in a world of always-personalized / universal SERPs. When everyone sees something different (personalization), and queries may or may not return a page full of universal results such as videos, live tweets, images, news, and who knows what else intermixed with those first 10 results, the effort to bring a group of people together to analyze SERPs change theories is monumental – and usually fruitless.

Look, it was always hard to analyze SERPs changes in the past, but the level of difficulty between 5 years ago and now has increased by a massive scale. And on top of all that, we used to be able to search on specific datacenters, knowing that we were actually using the datacenter we specified. That hasn’t been the case for a while, from my understanding. Just because we search from a specific datacenter or IP address, Google may actually flip us (without our knowledge) to a different one as the query gets re-funneled back through google.com, using whichever random IP address it’s designed to pull from at that moment. There’s nothing wrong with Google doing that, of course. It’s just their method of behind-the-scenes, technical management of queries. But it does mean we are left with less control than we might assume.

In addition, Google’s search API has always, I believe, been limited to a certain small subset of datacenters, so if anyone wanted to analyze SERPs, they either had to accept whatever the API gave them (which was often different than the real “in the wild” results), or they had to circumvent the API and scrape results from the real “in the wild” datacenters.

A Search Test Challenge

Having said all that, there are still nose-to-the-grindstone, focused people willing to at least try to discover answers to ranking changes within the convoluted Google SERPs. Some of the smart people who run search tests include peeps like David Harry (aka theGypsy), and many of the seriously obsessed search geeks (SOSG) who are part of his SEO Dojo. I’d like to throw a challenge to David and all the other like-minded test-oriented geeks.

Can any of you come up with some theories about the Mayday update that has at least some sort of data to back up your theory? (I don’t expect to ever see any kind of “this is certain proof” data, but I’m happy with “reasonable possibilities”). I’d think a fair amount of buzz would be thrown your way if you decided to share your thoughts and test results.

If it helps at all, I’ve been given access by an anonymous benefactor to what looks like a much more extensive list (than any I’ve ever seen before) of IP addresses that are live Google IPs. How these addresses relate to specific named datacenters (if there even is a correlation anymore), I don’t know. Which of these might be in use or not in use at any given moment of any given day, I don’t know. But I thought I’d present them here for public consumption anyway – just in case any of you technical wizards can make use of them in analyzing the Mayday changes.

A second challenge might be to just play with these IP addresses and see if there are any interesting conclusions one might be able to draw from them – such as whether a randomized round-robin with all these IPs might help defeat the throttling of access to Google’s search API. Obviously, you’d want to be careful to not raise the ire of Google by abusing these addresses in any sort of crazy way, but I assume anyone with the smarts to take on these challenges would already have thought of that.

Hopefully, Google won’t punish me for sharing this public data. I would assume that since Google has recently been called out for sniffing private data from their cam cars, that they can hardly fault us if we, in turn, sniff around their public IP addresses.

Luckily for us, online advertising is generally a lot more affordable than offline advertising is. Still, it pays to be as frugal as we possibly can, so I wanted to give a few thoughts on making the most of our advertising budgets (no matter how meager they may be).

Of course, text ads are one of the first things that come to mind when discussing online advertising, and I’m not going to throw you any surprises here. Just as you would expect, I would recommend starting out with a Google Adwords account, and testing the waters with a small budget. I do recommend that you read as much as you can about the process however, so that you don’t accidentally shoot yourself in the foot and overspend (sometimes significantly) without even realizing it.

Next, spend some time creating some banner ads (or having them created if you aren’t graphically inclined). I recommend creating a minimum of 4 ad sizes, but 9 sizes is ideal. You can see all the standard IAB recommend ad unit sizes here, but my recommendations are as follows:

Four Sizes To Always Have Available

• 125×125
• 468×60
• 160×600
• 728×90

Five Additional Ad Sizes If Possible

• 120×240
• 120×600
• 300×250
• 180×250
• 336×250

Sites will very likely have ad spots available in one of the above sizes, so if you have ads already created and ready to go for any of those sizes, it will be easy to get your ad up and running quickly.

The next thing I would consider is having 2 or 3 variations of ads in each of those sizes. This will allow you to test each ad so that you know which works better. I recommend reading an interview that the Wildfire Marketing Group did, in which they explain when and how often to run the same ads versus testing different ads.

Once you have all of your ad banners created, your next task is finding available spots to place them. My favorite place to advertise is on blogs. Many blogs are set up to run 125×125 ad blocks, so if you have that size handy, it will be easy to arrange. You can either approach bloggers directly via email or Twitter, and arrange for an ad spot, or you can go through one of the many networks (such as buysellads.com) to find them. Most blogs will display ads for a month term at a fixed price (which is usually fairly low).

Finally, run your ads, run your tests, and track the results. Once you have some initial stats to look at, you can plan for the long term.

A well-designed custom logo communicates a message to the public, conveying what your business is all about. Although Google’s logo is well-known and well-designed, Google often changes its logo for holidays and anniversaries. By portraying a more dynamic feel, their special occasion logos are able to actually “speak” to the public on these occasions.

Case Study: Google Doodle

According to Google:

At Google, we like to reflect the ever-changing world of our users through the logo designs on our homepage. These ‘doodles’ celebrate different people, events or special dates and are designed by our original Doodler, 30-year-old Dennis Hwang. (from Doodle 4 Google)

If we look at the history of Google, the first ever dynamic Google logo (they call it Doodle) was designed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin themselves. It was designed for the Burning Man festival in the summer of 1999. They created the Doodle in case their site crashed, and to explain why their phones weren’t being answered. The logo would convey the message to users that they had gone to the festival.

Later, they hired a graphic designer named Dennis Hwang, who has now become the official doodle maker of Google. He draws the designs by hand first and then computer graphs them. Dennis has designed nearly 150 Doodles to date. Presently, Google designs Doodles for many events and places them on their website for a limited period of time.

The most recent Doodle was displayed on May 10, 2009 to give tribute to Mother’s Day. The logo was predominantly pink in color, with a flower vase replacing the letter “L”.

Google’s use of Doodles that change for each event is a branding tactic that reflects Google’s image as a more advanced and up-to-date company, and also shows their affection for the events. This not only catches the eyes of their users, but also helps Google position its brand dynamically.

You can also use this tactic to brand your company with a dynamic logo on your website for each event. A good idea is to develop an event calendar so you can plan to have your logo designed before each event arrives. Then let your logo designer know what special message you want your logo to convey for that occasion. Upload it for the designated time period, and let your logo speak!

We all hear about how often people’s sites get hacked. This tool won’t stop that from happening, but here’s what it *will* do.

Let’s say a hacker places some malicious code in either some existing files on your site, or in new files on your site. Regardless of which method he used, he got in and accomplished his goal. Now, unbeknownst to you, your site is either:

1) serving hidden links to unsavory places
2) or redirecting just search users to unsavory sites that is then infecting those users’ computers with malware
3) or some other equally nefarious thing.

Either way, your site is toast, even if it looks perfectly normal to the naked eye. You may have no idea anything has happened until one day (maybe weeks later) you realize that you’ve been kicked out of Google’s SERPs (search listings).

Now you frantically start trying to find out why, and maybe, if you’re lucky, you realize you’ve been hacked. Then you have to begin the process of finding the files with the malicious code. Good luck with that!

That’s the basic problem. My new tool will help with that problem to some extent.

What it won’t do…it won’t prevent the attack. There are other things you should be doing/using to help win that battle. But if you lose that battle, and the attack happens, my tool kicks into gear.

My tool, called MonitorHackdFiles, is like a sentry for your site. It watches your site, and when it detects a file has changed (or been added), it notifies you via email and tells you which file(s) was changed. Now you know very quickly that you’ve been attacked, and you can react just as quickly. Now you can take whatever measures are needed to lock the site down, and with luck, you’ll avoid ever having that malicious code show its ugly face to Google, other search engines, or users.

It’s entire goal is to watch and notify. What you do with the information is entirely up to you. But what you don’t know, CAN hurt you.
