Create At Least One Resource Collection

crowdIf you blog, you’ll find that many of your posts, no matter how great they are, may end up being somewhat temporary in terms of drawing traffic to your site. Occasionally, you’ll have a really sticky post that keeps people coming back months or years later. Often that post ends up surprising you because you didn’t expect it to do so well. No matter how hard we try to predict the success or failure of a post, we very often guess wrong. I do think, though, that we can successfully predict often enough to make a difference.

Even one highly successful post can consistently bring you a substantial amount of traffic. The key is to make sure you have at least one of those, and the best way I’ve found is to work hard at creating at least one resource collection. What is a resource collection? It is a collection of “things”, related to your niche, that others want. For example, let’s say your niche is horses. Your visitors are horse-lovers. What collection of things would a horse lover be interested in? A series of high-quality pictures of horses? A collection of videos of a particular race horse? The “family trees” of each of the Kentucky Derby winners from the last 20 years?

My point is that while you are posting daily about your niche, you are creating interesting snippets of content, but not necessarily long-lasting resource collections. If you can create that one outstanding resource collection for your particular niche, I predict that you will have created a traffic attraction to your site that far exceeds your expectations. You’ll always need the daily content snippets, but try to create at least one unique resource collection as well.

:)

Interesting idea. I’m pretty new to running a blog and like the sound of this. I’ve had a few idea’s for offering a few things for download (screensavers of some of my pictures and maybe a couple of WP themes), but to be honest I’ve just not bothered to do anything about it.

Maybe I should give it more thought :)

It’s like your talking to me..lol. It’s so crazy how I get hits to some of my older posts or resources so long after they are even relevant (I really need to update that stuff). Awesome post.

  3. So simple yet so powerful, indeed. A great reminder that simplicity can be ultra-powerful.
