Search Geek Challenges – Google, Mayday, and Sniffing Google IP Addresses
This is one of those posts that will only interest a subset of my normal readers.
UPDATE: Since I wrote this post, Matt Cutts of Google admitted that Mayday was an algo change targeted at serving up better long-tail results. It’s been implied that this was aimed at dealing with content farms such as Mahalo that rank well for autogenerated and scraped pages. If you’ve been paying attention to some of the SEO chatter this month, you’ve probably noticed a lot of talk about what’s been dubbed The Google Mayday Update. The name was coined in a WMW thread because of some significant rankings changes in the Google SERPs that some people were seeing right around the beginning of May (2010) – or Mayday. This thread, if you’re interested in reading it, spans 3 threads so far, because it was getting so long. You can see them here, here, and here. Lots of theories swirl in these threads, and at least one live blogger from the GoogleIO event reported that Matt Cutts stated at that event that Mayday is an algorithmic change in Google.
One of the main things being tossed about is that long-tail keyword phrases are taking big hits, and various theories abound as to why. Some wonder if this is related to a roll-out of Caffeine, and of course, there’s side arguments about whether or not Caffeine is really rolling out that widely yet or not. Others think it may be due to a change in valuing recent backlinks (which may also be related to whether or not Caffeine has been rolled out or not). You can probably dig up another few dozen possible theories in those threads, but one thing stands out to me.
Analyzing SERPs Algo Changes Is Harder Than Ever Before
It’s getting harder and harder to analyze what’s going on now that we live in a world of always-personalized / universal SERPs. When everyone sees something different (personalization), and queries may or may not return a page full of universal results such as videos, live tweets, images, news, and who knows what else intermixed with those first 10 results, the effort to bring a group of people together to analyze SERPs change theories is monumental – and usually fruitless.
Look, it was always hard to analyze SERPs changes in the past, but the level of difficulty between 5 years ago and now has increased by a massive scale. And on top of all that, we used to be able to search on specific datacenters, knowing that we were actually using the datacenter we specified. That hasn’t been the case for a while, from my understanding. Just because we search from a specific datacenter or IP address, Google may actually flip us (without our knowledge) to a different one as the query gets re-funneled back through google.com, using whichever random IP address it’s designed to pull from at that moment. There’s nothing wrong with Google doing that, of course. It’s just their method of behind-the-scenes, technical management of queries. But it does mean we are left with less control than we might assume.
In addition, Google’s search API has always, I believe, been limited to a certain small subset of datacenters, so if anyone wanted to analyze SERPs, they either had to accept whatever the API gave them (which was often different than the real “in the wild” results), or they had to circumvent the API and scrape results from the real “in the wild” datacenters.
A Search Test Challenge
Having said all that, there are still nose-to-the-grindstone, focused people willing to at least try to discover answers to ranking changes within the convoluted Google SERPs. Some of the smart people who run search tests include peeps like David Harry (aka theGypsy), and many of the seriously obsessed search geeks (SOSG) who are part of his SEO Dojo. I’d like to throw a challenge to David and all the other like-minded test-oriented geeks.
Can any of you come up with some theories about the Mayday update that has at least some sort of data to back up your theory? (I don’t expect to ever see any kind of “this is certain proof” data, but I’m happy with “reasonable possibilities”). I’d think a fair amount of buzz would be thrown your way if you decided to share your thoughts and test results.
If it helps at all, I’ve been given access by an anonymous benefactor to what looks like a much more extensive list (than any I’ve ever seen before) of IP addresses that are live Google IPs. How these addresses relate to specific named datacenters (if there even is a correlation anymore), I don’t know. Which of these might be in use or not in use at any given moment of any given day, I don’t know. But I thought I’d present them here for public consumption anyway – just in case any of you technical wizards can make use of them in analyzing the Mayday changes.
A second challenge might be to just play with these IP addresses and see if there are any interesting conclusions one might be able to draw from them – such as whether a randomized round-robin with all these IPs might help defeat the throttling of access to Google’s search API. Obviously, you’d want to be careful to not raise the ire of Google by abusing these addresses in any sort of crazy way, but I assume anyone with the smarts to take on these challenges would already have thought of that. 
Hopefully, Google won’t punish me for sharing this public data. I would assume that since Google has recently been called out for sniffing private data from their cam cars, that they can hardly fault us if we, in turn, sniff around their public IP addresses.

Hey DD what’s shaking? I can certainly come up with some theories (many of which we’ve been discussing/floating in zee chat room) as to a few things we were expecting in the first 1/2 of this year (ie; Psearch roll out being gradual, Google’s need for speed, new infrastructure (caffeine) = new signals/better processing). It certainly isn’t about the banter related to recently released patents… since they’re mostly 5-6 yrs old and ‘patent pending’ means one can happily implement them at the time of filing…. or before.
As for data, well that one is always a lot trickier without some large scale data sets. We are planning another round of Psearch testing shortly as my IR pals said it would likely be incremental (which means re-testing).
Let me start rounding up our notes, compare to some of the other data (WMW etc..), start a thread and see what we find.

Thx for this unique perspective on the Mayday update. Your question, “Can any of you come up with some theories about the Mayday update that has at least some sort of data to back up your theory?” is right on. There is so much speculation but very few concrete answers.
