Injecting Passion and Compassion Into Your Business

Every time I turn around, I see another blog post stating that you need to be passionate about your topic in order to succeed with it. I do agree that passion is very important, but it needs to be balanced with compassion as well.

Some definitions of passion include:
Intense, driving, or overmastering feeling or conviction;
Ardent affection;
A strong liking or desire for or devotion to some activity, object, or concept

A definition of compassion is:
Sympathetic consciousness of others’ distress together with a desire to alleviate it

When we impart information via the Internet, we shouldn’t be merely spewing information that we are passionate about. We should have valid reasons for sharing that information. Those reasons should include the fact that we recognize that others may need this information to solve some problem which they have. That problem may not be causing them distress, so the above definition of compassion may seem like overkill, but the concept still applies. If you think about presenting information based on solving others’ needs, you will be automatically be injecting compassion into the process.

If you are already passionate about your subject matter, and you add compassion to that mix, you will be better able to reach your audience.

The combination of passion for your niche, injected with compassion for those needing the information you present, can produce content that gives your users exactly what they are seeking. It can enable you to present that content in such a way that the user not receives exactly what she wants, but also responds back to you in the way that you want. If your desire is to communicate with your user, you stand a much better chance of that if you’ve connected with that user’s needs. That connection is often made by being compassionate to the problems of your users, and by attempting to alleviate the problems of your users by giving them the information they need.

By combining both your passion for your topic, with a compassion for your users’ needs, you create content that connects with people, and draws visitors to your site. This connection then serves both you and your users, creating a web of success for everyone involved.
