Nice info,
Hey i analyzed my requirements and i got to know that now i need a VPS hosting but problem is that i don't know anything of VPS. Buying managed vps is not in my budget.
What will you do if you will be in similar situation.
Are there any tutorials how to set up websites on Unmanaged vps.

I have. And despite everyone saying that Amazon was so cheap, it turned out to be far more expensive than I imagined. Maybe one day it would be cost-effective for me, but not in the situation that I tried it for.

Donna,

Nice of you to respond to that comment. have you considered elastic resources like Amazon, Azure, Google app engines and the like to meet growing needs?

I don't have a particular rule of thumb, Badri. Basically, when the site is painfully slow because the traffic is hammering it, and nothing you do lightens the load enough, it's time to move on. Migration can be a pain. I recommend playing with the new server and becoming familiar with any new technology before actually moving the site. At the very least, make sure you understand the control panel; how to restart the server, etc.

Donna,

another area of concern is getting to know when you have outgrown a shared and then a VPS! What drove you specifically to look at a VPS option? is there a rule of thumb that you have figured out?

Hi Donna,

Pretty down-to-earth article. wish you could have also talked about the migration pains from a shared to VPS which is a major concern for sites that have suddenly found themselves hugely popular! how did you manage the transition period?

I'm glad my real world explanation helps. I get tired of all the tech speak too. And like you, I'm not terribly keen on the headaches that would come with client hosting, but it's definitely a good idea for some.

We have a dedicated server at work and it's super fast but would be completely overkill if I were to host my blog on it.

I think dedicated would definitely be more for ecommerce, news sites and blogs that are simply huge like smashing magazine.

VPS looks great because of the flexibility and being able to scale even more than shared.

Don't forget also that you could also balance out your costs if you ever decided to do reseller hosting on your server. Been mulling the idea of hosting websites for a few clients but then again it would come with headaches.

Thanks for clarifying the differences Donna; so tired of a lot of tech speak that it's great just to hear a real world explanation.

Yes, one of those 50-100$/month VPS plans should cover the needs for most sites. You might want to mention those "reseller" plans, that are a good option for those that owns a lot of low traffic sites.

Yes, it has been a long time. I have been "upgrading" myself. It took longer than expected.

Hey, sorv, I agree that having a managed server is very likely worth the extra expense, but of course, you do have to be able to actually afford it in the first place. :) But definitely, if I had my preference, I'd want to know that there were experienced folks that I could rely upon to manage things for me. VPS plans usually do have a RAM limit, but it's still usually a good in-between measure when shared won't do, but dedicated isn't possible. Good to hear from you, btw, haven't spoken with you in a while. Hope you're well.
