Linux in da house

Well, not yet, but almost. It’s time for this little household to try Linux on one of our desktop machines. I’ve been wanting to play with a nice desktop flavor of Linux for a while, but we finally have a spare machine to use. I want it to be as user-friendly as possible, so I’m going with Freespire. Rather than downloading the 680MB ISO install file (which is free), I decided I’d just order a cd for 99 cents plus 99 cents shipping – for a total whopping $1.98. That’s free enough.

My thought process on choosing Freespire is that it seems to be as easy as it can be to install and use, it comes with all the standard codecs and drivers I’ll probably need, and I’ll get to use the CNR service to make downloading and installing of software a one-click snap.

Now, this doesn’t mean that I hate Microsoft Windows. I’ve always been a fan. I’m not crazy about Macs though, so it’s highly doubtful I’ll ever bring one of those in my house. But Linux is appealing because it’s free and it’s geeky. I’ve been wanting to play with it for years, and now … well … it’s just time.
