Who Are You and What Can You Contribute?

One of the things that scares most people about venturing into this “make a living online” business is that they don’t know what they can contribute. I have no doubt whatsoever that everyone has knowledge to share, and that knowledge can translate into making a living. We’ll cover this particular topic many times in the future, but today I’m going to focus on just one small aspect.

Who are you? You first need to understand that before you can see what it is you have to contribute to the world’s knowledge base. This little exercise is going to help you find answers to that question. You can then use the results of the exercise later on when we discuss other related aspects.

By now, you’ve probably seen… Continue reading

Pick The Right Domain Name

Yesterday, I encouraged you to establish your Internet presence ASAP, even if you weren’t sure you were ready. However, I realized later that I should have also encouraged you to pick the right domain name first. Having a bad domain name could be difficult to overcome later.

I could go into a long diatribe about how to pick the right domain name, but others have done it before me, so instead I’m going to send you off to one that I particularly like. 14thc has a good article, called How to choose a breakthrough domain for your website, that spells it all out in simple terms. The article continues on in several parts, so be sure to read them all.

If you haven’t yet registered… Continue reading

Establish Your Internet Presence ASAP

This morning, as I was on my Internet travels, floating from one new blog to another, I found myself on a blog written by a man who lives not far from me. It’s always interesting to discover a neighbor in this vast ‘net world, so I stopped long enough to read a bit of what he had written. I noticed this little tidbit of advice and thought I would pass it along to you, with my own thoughts injected as well, of course.

Chris Hartwell, of New Orleans Internet Marketing, said:

I tell everybody I know, if you’re interested in anything, start a website on it. Let me help you with it. Just put something out there, and sooner or later, if you work on it a little bit… Continue reading

Fantasy Football Teaches You About Business

Are you thinking about following my plan to make a living from home in your pajamas? Are you already working towards that goal? If so, then I suggest you sign up for a Fantasy Football league now (before the football season begins). Go ahead and ask me why. It’s a legitimate question. Go ahead and tell me you either don’t know anything about playing Fantasy Football or you don’t even know anything about the sport of football. I’ll tackle that one too. (Like how I got that football-related term in there?)

Let’s handle the last doubts first. You don’t know anything about either the sport of football or the game of Fantasy Football. That’s perfectly fine. Perhaps with some knowledge, you… Continue reading

Keep Home Office Business Costs Down

Having a successful home based business doesn’t rely only upon how much income you bring in. Some of the success lies in how well you cut expenses. Here are a few tips to keep those expenses down to a minimum.

  1. Use Free or Open Source Software as often as possible. I’m moving more and more towards eliminating any software that I have to pay for, and the open source movement is making that easier to do now.
  2. Freecycle. Freecycling is a grass-roots movement of people giving (and getting) stuff for free in their local communities. This is a great way to get used office equipment, desks, and many other home-office related items without having to pay for them. (It’s also a great way to get

Business, Productivity, and Freedom

As I’ve mentioned, I plan to be very prepared for any future hard drive crashes. Between offline data backup and portable apps, I should be well on my way to having a hard drive free existence. I haven’t yet received my USB flash drives that I ordered, so I don’t yet know for sure if the portable apps idea will really hold water or not, but for the moment, I’m assuming it will be a good idea. While I’m waiting to find out, I’ve been thinking about a calendaring app. Every time my hard drive dies, I lose all my calendar information…reminders, etc. And because my memory is really lousy, I depend heavily upon reminders. A calendar also helps keep me productive… Continue reading

Are You an Idea Person?

great idea How often do you say “I have an idea”? Does anyone make a face or groan when you say that? How often do you hear in response, “Now what”? If you are an idea person like I am, you’ll have that scenario play out many times over your lifetime. Some people just have a brain that grows ideas like a unkempt yard grows weeds. We don’t really have control over when or where these ideas will spring forth; they just erupt at any time, in any place. Because we have so many ideas, very few, statistically, actually ever go beyond the initial “I have an idea” phase. It would be next to… Continue reading
