Dictating Your Site Content

dictationI’ve heard some people reject the idea of having their own blog or site because they don’t believe they are capable of writing well, or they say they can’t type. I always counter that objection by saying, “Phooey!” If you are capable of speaking, you are capable of creating content. You can simply dictate into a microphone, and you don’t even need a human secretary to transcribe it. Speech recognition software has come a long way, and frankly, it’s to the point where it’s good enough to be usable.

If your computer’s operating system is Microsoft Vista (any version), you already have speech recognition software to work with. Vista’s Speech Recognition application comes free with the operating system, and it actually works pretty well. Any software of this sort requires a bit of practice, but once you get the hang of it, you can get to the point where you almost never have to touch a keyboard.

If you don’t have Vista, there are other options available, though at a cost. Dragon NaturallySpeaking is the software I’m most familiar with, but I assume there are probably other competitors for this type of technology as well.

Regardless of which software is used, you can turn your ordinary conversational speech into written content for your own blog or site. Don’t let your inability to write or type well stop you. There are alternatives, and speech recognition software could be what works for you.

  1. thanks for the tip on vista’s speech rec app. i didn’t know about it and think i will have to give it a try. i wonder if a speech rec personality typically comes off different than a written one? do you think there would be more slang or off the cuff remarks? do create any of your content this way?

  2. I don’t create my content this way, yet, because I’m not yet comfortable enough with doing it via voice. But I’m working on it, because I think it might be useful once I really get the hang of it. Of course, I do type really fast, so it may not be as useful to me as it might be to a slow typist. I’m not sure yet about the rest of your questions regarding slang, etc. I’m still too new at it to be sure, but you raise good questions.
