Doing taxes now

Some family members operate a tax service here in town, and they managed to convince me to help them out during tax season. So, for the last week, I’ve actually been getting up, getting dressed way early in the morning, and going out to a J-O-B. Gawd, I haven’t worked outside my home in so long that this is killing me.

But even worse, they failed to tell me just how crazy this work is at this time of year. I thought I would be just helping out part time, but no, they’ve roped me into working like a dog for 10-12 hours per day, 6 days a week. Not that they don’t really need the help. People line up outside the door and down the street, and will literally wait for hours to get their taxes done. I’ve never seen anything so crazy in all my life.

I come home, dog-tired, with only a couple of hours to eat, relax, and catch up on email. Then it’s time for bed so I can start anew the next day. This is soooo not my usual lifestyle.

I initially agreed, because this is the beginning of my slow season, so I thought I would have a little extra time to help out, and I could make a few bucks to put aside for my really slow season (summertime). But I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I don’t know what your local tax service is like, but if it’s anything like ours, I just want to ask you one thing. Be nice to your tax person. He or she works very hard, and very long hours.

That’s all the time I have to write. I have to go to work now. (It’s hard to get those words out of my mouth).

  1. Wow, that is crazy.

    Good luck with that.

  2. Yeah, it’s funny how easily (and without any thought) I agreed to this. “Help out for a little during tax season? Sure, I can do that. That’s my slow time, so no problem.”

    Then…reality hits. Ouch.
